Library was founded in 1978 based on the books, journals and scientific works, collected as result of international book-exchange which started at the time of the International geophysical year (1957–1958).

Now total fund of the library is 51 thousand of the printed items, more than a half is foreign publications.

In the library the literature on the following subjects is collected:

  2. Meteorology;
  3. Climatology;
  4. Oceanography;
  5. Glaciology;
  6. Physics of the Earth;
  7. Hydrology of land;
  8. General issues of Geology;
  9. Lithology;
  10. Tectonics;
  11. Auroras;
  12. Protection of Environment;
  13. Computing and Programming.

The library has alphabetical and systematic catalogs, retrospective catalogs of foreign and domestic journals.

Informational and library service is the basis of the library work; in particular, every month themed exhibitions are organized, every week the exhibitions of the new books are organized.

July 11, 2018. Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, V. A. Petrov, head of the Geoinformatics Laboratory of IGEM RAS, visited GC RAS. The purpose of the visit was to participate in a working meeting in which A. Gvishiani, Director of the Geophysical Center, A. Soloviev, Deputy Director for Science, A. Rybkina, Deputy Director for Development, and researcher A. Odintsova participated.

July 6-10, 2018. Scientists of the Laboratory of Geoinformatics and Geomagnetic Studies D. V. Peregudov and M. N. Dobrovolsky took part in the joint event – the 26th Extended European Cosmic Ray Symposium and 35th Russian Cosmic Ray Conference. The event was held at the Altai State University (Barnaul, Russia).

July 2-4, 2018. Leading engineer of the Laboratory of Geoinformatics and Geomagnetic Studies of GC RAS A. Grudnev visited "Klimovskaya" observatory (Arkhangelsk region, Klimovskaya village). The main goal of the expedition is to carry out routine preventive works aimed at maintaining the working capacity of geomagnetic equipment, including a scalar magnetometer.

July 4, 2018. Two international scientific organizations - the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) have united in a new union - the International Science Council (ISC). GC RAS represents the interests of Russia in the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), now part of the ISC. IUGG General Secretary Alik T. Ismail-Zade was elected as the chief secretary of the newly formed Council.
